hacienda

When owner of Hacienda, Jessica Beattie, is not running after her 7-year-old twins or traveling the world, she can be found in her colorful shop in the 2nd Street District in Austin, Texas. Filled with lovely little vignettes, some from her own private label HACIENDA Collection, others from local artisans and others from her global jaunts, you get the idea Jessica’s home is a reflection of her store (or maybe the other way around) and that either way she would throw one amazing party. We sat down with Jessica and asked her to share all of her entertaining secrets, including a few tips for making sure the littlest guests feel right at home.

The Menu

“For me it’s all about the preparation. Regardless of the season I like to have the majority of the meal done and ready to go when my guests arrive so I can be present and enjoy their company. During the summer, I keep the menu cool and fresh. Nothing on heat – Maybe it’s a chilled gazpacho and tuna ceviche on tortillas chips. For cooler weather, I have everything warming and ready in the oven so I can pull out each dish and start eating right away.”

The Music

“It really depends on the mood you’re trying to create. I love living in Austin with a variety of fresh music sprouting everyday. I aim to showcase an eclectic mix of local indie and country artists. The key is to make sure it’s easily listening, nothing too loud or distracting.”

The Drinks

“Similar to the meal, I try to keep the cocktail simple and pre-made. I love setting up a bar with a full pitcher and variety of garnishes so each guest can make it their own. I also always have a light beer and serve a chilled rose year round.”

The Decor

“For entertaining, linen napkins and real silverware are a must. Other then that I keep it casual. I recommend low centerpieces like succulent planters, bowls of fruit or bud cases of flower or herbs from the garden. I’ll also add in HACIENDA’s Mexican glassware for a fun pop of color. It’s surprising how the colors can work at a backyard barbecue, an Easter brunch or a variety of other settings.”

The Invitations

“I love the intimacy and excitement that printed invitations come with. That being said, they’re not a must have. A quick phone call can easily be just as intimate.”

What To Wear

“In warm weather I am always in a bathing suit and cover-up that still looks appropriate as a dress so I can go from the table to jumping in the pool with the kids. ”

On Accommodating Children

“I love having kids at the “adults table”. You never know what they’re going to say or what utensil will go flying! It adds to the fun! I do make sure to have a few kid friendly dinner options and always have a few different dessert options; at least one with chocolate and one with fruit.”
